The highly anticipated next iteration on the product line is expected to be the S6 model which so far we know little about. Sources say Samsung is gearing up to go head to head against Apple's iPhone 6 and is planning to launch the device in early 2015. This gives Apple a couple of months of head start in sales, but analyst say the extra time gives much needed time for Samsung to work out any bugs on their device. Working out such problems is essential to having a good product launch. The iPhone 6 Plus for example has been having bending issues where the body cracks along the volume controls from simple daily use. iOS 8 has been plagued with Wi-fi and battery draining issues due to poorly optimized code. These are problems that could've been prevented with extra time devoted to testing and development.</span></span></div>

be a growing trend in the mobile handset industry, it used to be that the

that range will offer a sizeable increase in performance. It is also speculated
that the screen size will take a slight jump to somewhere in the 5.3 inch range
with a high-end QHD screen offering a ultra-crisp and colorful display. All
these great new features and specs add up, pricing has been officially release
but being that the S5 cost $600 new at launch there's no reason to believe the
S6 will cost any less. Even with a 2 year contract on select carriers you're

There I was, lined up in the queue of the local electronics store, waiting to collect my Microsoft Surface Pro 2 from the seemingly tired and overworked store attendant behind the counter. I glanced over at the section of the store where all the Surfaces were lined up for display, thinking to myself about whether I’ve made the right decision or not. It definitely wasn’t easy, that’s for sure.</div>

For quite some time now, I’ve found myself in a pickle, not knowing whether to get a fully-fledged ultrabook for university, or continue using a somewhat lackluster Android tablet to do all the heavy lifting while out and about. So when Microsoft reminded us on the 23rd of September that there was something in between, namely their Surface products, I thought, why not?</div>

I had the same thought pop up in my mind when I picked up the Surface Pro 2 in-store for the first time, but I just couldn’t help but notice it again. Contrary to what many people have led me to believe, the device is surprisingly lighter than what I had originally thought. Weighing in at around 900 grams (2 pounds), it really wasn’t <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">that</em> much heavier than my friend’s iPad 3 (650 g; 1.44 lb), and it was lighter than the 11-inch Macbook Air (1.09 kg; 2.38 lb). This to me, is absolutely fine and justified, as the Surface Pro 2 is both/neither a tablet and a laptop, and it wouldn’t be fair to judge its worth in comparison with either form factors.</div>

With the Surface Pro 2 in my hands, it didn’t take me long to truly appreciate its hardware and design. Measuring in at 275 x 173 x13 mm (10.81 x 6.81 x 0.51 inches), its stylish and sleek chassis is made of dark, brushed magnesium which Microsoft terms as VaporMg. It not only feels premium and cool to the touch, but also feels remarkably sturdy and robust, not giving in the slightest when I tried to twisted each end of the tablet in opposite directions.</div>

In addition to the 128 GB version with 4 GB of RAM which I chose, the device is also available in a 64 GB variety with 4 GB of RAM, as well as 256 GB and 512 GB configurations with 8 GB of RAM. It’s advisable for those interested in the device to think carefully about the amount of storage you would like, as the system partition eats up around 30 GB of the space straight out of the box.</div>

The Surface Pro 2′s screen is absolutely gorgeous. The 10.6 inch full-HD IPS LCD displays colors beautifully. And since the screen is optically-bonded, there’s minimal space between the glass and the touch screen, reducing glare and increasing touch sensitivity. Watching movies with friends also shouldn’t be a problem, as the screen retains its brightness and contrast from every side and at almost every angle. The screen has 208 ppi. This results in relatively crisp text, although not quite as crisp on our modern 1080p smartphones.</div>

But what’s a beautiful screen when it’s scratched or damaged? The good thing is, a singular piece of Corning Gorilla Glass 2 covers the entire front area of the Surface Pro 2, so you can expect greater resistance and endurance for what is arguably one of the most important parts of the device. Despite this however, I still decided to cover the front with a screen protector for that extra layer of protection and some added peace of mind. As with all screens, the screen of the Surface Pro is prone to smudges and fingerprints, but when the screen brightness is high, it’s hard to notice them.</div>

The screen also uses Wacom active digitizer technology, which provides extremely high pressure sensitivity when you’re using the included pen or stylus. This means the Surface Pro 2 is fantastic for artists who are looking for a device that doubles as a high-quality drawing pad. I’m also thankful that the screen has palm rejection, which means that you can comfortably write with the included pen as you would normally would, without having to worry about any screen interference from the rest of your hand. I found this to be particularly useful when quickly jotting down notes on the Surface Pro 2 when there wasn’t a keyboard around.</div>

In all honesty, a Surface wouldn’t be a Surface without the optional keyboard cover. So I was disappointed that it wasn’t included with the tablet as a singular package, and even more so when I found out that it was going to cost me an additional $150 AU for the Type Cover 2. The alternative would have been the Touch Cover 2, which was only $10 cheaper.</div>

The Type Cover 2 keyboard attaches to the bottom of the Surface Pro 2 via magnetic pins, and latches on strongly—strong enough to lift the device from the keyboard. I like how incredibly thin the keyboard is, being 1.5 mm, which reduces overall weight and clunkiness. Despite the thinness, it retains decent travel, making typing for long periods a decent, if not pleasant, experience. Typing in the dark also isn’t a problem, as this time round, Microsoft added backlit keys to the Type Cover.</div>

Besides the actual keys of this accessory, the keyboard is made of a felt-like material that is soft and comfortable to the touch. One of the downsides of this construction is that even the touchpad is of the same material, making mouse navigation rather cumbersome due to the increased friction and grip. Furthermore, I’ve found it very difficult to actually press the left and right felt pads that serve as left and right clicks because of their non-existent travel. Another gripe of mine is that the touchpad is very narrow, which coupled with the very little differentiation between the pad and the actual keyboard material, further hinders a comfortable mouse navigation experience. I’m well aware that I can simply use the touch screen to navigate, but I don’t want to stretch my arm towards the screen and hold it in the air for a prolonged period of time while simply browsing the web. But then again, that’s just me.</div>

The keyboard also acts as a cover for the screen, hence the name Type/Touch Cover, by folding upwards towards the screen. The felt-like material is adequate enough to guard the screen from the accidental bump or knock, but it definitely won’t hold against anything forceful. Additionally, because of this form factor, you don’t have to carry around two separate parts around. Rather, you can simply have it all as one piece. however, there have been concerns raised regarding the screen getting scratched by the keyboard, either by the actual keys, or because there was something was wedged in between such as a spec of sand or other hard material.</div>

Having the Surface Pro 2 replace both my Android tablet and home laptop PC that ran Windows 7, the transition was quite a jarring experience. No doubt, the biggest change for me was the axing of the Start menu, which was replaced by the ‘Metro’ interface of Windows 8.1. At first, I was doubtful about whether I would take kindly and settle in comfortably with the new interface since I’ve been using Android and Windows 7 for a very long time. I then came to realize that Windows 8.1 is actually quite similar to aspects of both operating systems.</div>

PC users will most definitely be familiar with the Desktop ‘app’ on Windows 8.1, retaining that wholesome desktop PC experience minus the Start menu. In fact, besides the missing Start menu, there really isn’t anything else different from the desktop of Windows 7. Similarly, parallels can be drawn between Metro UI’s Live Tiles and Android’s widgets, both of which constantly and conveniently provide live updates and feeds right on the home screen. Additionally, Live Tiles are highly customizable, even more so than most Android widgets, allowing you to resize, recolor, and move them according to how you like. Users of the Galaxy Note series will be familiar with Windows 8.1′s feature of splitting the screen into two resizable portions, both running different applications at the same time. There is also a ‘Charms bar,’ which slides out from the right of the screen to provide handy shortcuts such as to settings and search.</div>

However, there are still a couple of gripes I have, one being the very nature of Metro UI. It’s fantastic for touch oriented devices like the Surface Pro 2, where navigation is as simple as a swipe and a tap,<br />
<del style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">but when you’re using the device with a mouse, and especially with the touchpad, navigating the horizontal interface can be confusing</del>. You have to either drag the bar at the bottom left or right with the mouse, or scroll up or down, which doesn’t quite make sense. Another thing is the very notable lack of apps, exemplified further when migrating from Android. But then again, you get the ability to run desktop X86 programs in return, which I guess is a fair exchange. Despite this, it should be noted that there are plenty of desktop applications that are still not optimized for the Surface Pro 2, resulting in tiny and misaligned interfaces (Photoshop), and small or fuzzy fonts (Google Chrome).</div>

Among the more acclaimed features of the Surface Pro 2 is its powerful 4th-Gen (Haswell) Intel Core i5 processor. A dual-core CPU clocking in at 1.6 Ghz, the device can expand this to 2.6 Ghz with Turbo Boost. But more importantly, it significantly increases the battery life compared to the original Surface Pro. The previous model would last no more than 5 hours at the most. But with the new CPU, the Surface Pro 2 lasts up to 6 and a half to 7 hours, depending on the power settings.</div>

With the i5 processor, 4 GB of RAM, and Intel HD Graphics 4400 on the inside, the Surface Pro 2 didn’t stutter or lag one bit when handling my medium to fairly-heavy usage. Multitasking resource-intensive desktop applications such as Photoshop, AVG, and Mozilla Firefox, while having multiple background applications running such as Dropbox, Box, and Evernote did not pose a challenge at all. This shows that the device can easily handle any mainstream workload. Streaming 1080p videos on YouTube was handled just as easily, a rare occurrence on my previous laptop. I’ve heard plenty of times from commentators that the Surface Pro 2 is a good device, but there are better laptops out there, and there are better tablets out there. Sure, if that’s how you want to see it, that’s absolutely fine. But you may have noticed that I have not once referred to the Surface Pro 2 as either a tablet or a PC. Why? Because it’s neither, and it shouldn’t be compared and judged as such. You can’t rip off the screen of a laptop and use it as a tablet. Rather, it’s in it’s own class of devices, among the likes of the Sony Vaio Tap 11 and the Dell Venue 11 Pro, and to an extent, hybrids in other form factors such as the Lenovo Yoga and Sony Vaio Duo. These are all devices that are highly capable of serving as a PC, <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">as well as</em> providing similar convenience and portability as a tablet.</div>

This unique form factor, in combination with the device’s superior build quality and exceptional performance, are all very compelling factors to choose the Surface Pro 2. Throughout my first week of owning the device, it has served me and my needs well, and has surpassed my expectations for a device that many have unfairly judged negatively in comparison to devices of other categories.</div>

Of course, the device, as well as its category, is still young, and it still has quite a distance to travel, as seen with the gripes I’ve experienced. Hopefully in the future, Microsoft will shave off a couple of millimeters from the device’s thickness, introduce better designed keyboards (especially considering the prices you’ll be paying for them), and increase the battery life—all of which I’m sure will come in time.</div>

Let's see what they say.<br />

<strong style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Engadget’s review</strong> starts off by saying that the Nexus 5 is the best phone that $350 can buy. While comparing the new device with its predecessor, the Nexus 4, Molen says that the former has improved upon last year’s model in nearly every possible way, including the best display (4.95-inches, 1920x1080 pixels), top-of-the-line processor (2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC), a respectable amount of storage space and LTE support. Design-wise, the reviewer said that the new handset’s simplistic design does not come with the eye-catching elements that other flagship smartphones currently sport. The device is not ugly, but there isn’t much about it that is striking either. Performance-wise, the Nexus 5 made all the right moves, especially given the price point.</div>

The biggest complaint was the “disappointing” performance of the 8-megapixel camera. While the shooter was said to give beautiful photos in a “perfect setting”, in real-world scenarios, the camera underperformed. Photos and videos were shot with too little contrast, too little saturation and too little colour. The camera app itself was said to be slow to focus and even slow to launch in the first place.<br />

The issues, the review says, are being fixed by the Android team and will come in the coming weeks. Apart from this, though, the Nexus 5 is an excellent phone in many ways, according to the Verge reviewer. The build, processing power and gorgeous display were all equally praised. Topolsky goes on to say that the polished and refined KitKat update reinforces the thought that Android leads the way in mobile from a functionality and user interface standpoint. And the $350 price tag does not go unnoticed here either, with the reviewer saying that getting a device of this quality for that price point is definitely worth taking notice of, provided Google follows though and tweaks the performance of the camera.</div>

The reviewer, however, does say that the Nexus 5 comes with a good display, but not a great one, with the end result not falling in line with other high-end handsets. Other complaints were with the camera, the mediocre call quality and the relatively low battery life. But the biggest point in favor of the Nexus 5, according to the reviewer, was the value for money aspect of the new handset.</div>

Unlike the Nexus 4, the new handset supports high-speed LTE, which was something most reviews counted as a positive. The new camera on the device comes with optical image stabilisation and an HDR+ setting that takes multiple pictures in burst mode. Like the other reviewers, though, Magid said that he was not blown away by the photo quality, but said it was good by Android standards. Physically, the new handset feels good in the hand for such a large phone, though there is nothing particularly unique or stunning about the way it looks, according to the reviewer. While talking about the latest OS, Magid said that his favorite feature was the ubiquitous voice search that allows the user to say OK Google from any home screen to search the Internet, make calls, get directions or launch an app. Call quality, according to the reviewer, is excellent, but depends more on the carrier and network conditions than on the phone itself. The speaker was found to be loud and pretty clear as well.<br />

Overall, Mossberg said that the Nexus 5 is the best Nexus phone that he has tested yet, but the phone and its software are designed more to bolster Google features and overall Android dominance than to impress sophisticated users.</div>

Though the company is a late entrant in the desi HD smartphone club, the Canvas Turbo comes with a pretty nifty specs sheet, given the price. Let’s take a closer look at its specifications. <br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">User Interface – Android 4.2.1</span><br />Micromax keeps it pretty simple with the user interface as the Canvas Turbo runs on stock Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean OS. One can expect smart gestures like answering a call by simply placing the phone on your ears or putting an active call on speaker by flipping over the phone. It also includes the gimmicky “blow to unlock” feature that was seen in the Canvas 4.<br /><br /> <br /><br />The phone comes with a list of pre-loaded apps from the company such as M! Security, M! Live, M! Unlock as well as third party vendors like Spuul, Hike, Opera Mini and more. If you remember, Micromax has also signed a deal with BlackBerry to preload BBM on its Canvas phones. So, you can expect BBM for Android too. It includes a feature called ifloat that serves as a quick launcher for calls, messages, browser, settings, etc. from any screen. The Canvas Turbo also supports popup video, popup browser, and multi video view. <br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">Cellular Connectivity – GSM, 3G</span><br />The Canvas Turbo supports GSM and 3G networks. However, it should be noted that the company has started working on 4G-enabled devices, which are expected to be launched later this year.<br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">Display – 5-inch SHARP full HD CGS </span><br />One of the major disappointments with the Canvas 4 was its 720p screen instead of the highly anticipated full-HD display. Micromax has now caught up with the rest as the Canvas Turbo sports a 5-inch SHARP full HD CGS (Continuous Grain Silicon) IPS display, which brings the pixel count all the way up to 441ppi. This means, we can expect crisp and clear images. It is built of anodised aluminium and Micromax claims that it also doubles as an antenna to boost signal strength. <br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">Wi-Fi</span><br />The Canvas Turbo supports Wi-Fi, but so far there has been no mention of the connectivity options. There is no word on dual-band support either.<br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">Processor – 1.5GHz</span><br />Micromax continues employing Mediatek chipsets on its devices. The Canvas Turbo is powered by MediaTek’s MT6589T quad-core processor that clocks at 1.5GHz. It is coupled with 2GB of RAM, which means one can expect smooth UI access. The recently released Gionee Elife E6 is also powered with a similar processor. Graphics are handled by a dedicated PowerVR graphics processor to enhance user experience while playing games or watching movies. <br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">Internal storage – 16GB, no room for expansion</span><br />The Canvas Turbo is available with 16GB onboard storage option, which isn’t bad. However, neither does it offer other storage capacities nor has it included a memory card slot. <br /><br /><span style="font-size: large;">Camera – 13-megapxiel BSI sensor, 5-megapixel front-facing camera</span><br />On the camera front, the Canvas Turbo comes with a 13-megapxiel BSI sensor on the rear side with support for auto-focus and LED flash. It also has a 5-megapixel front shooter. The company has come with a quirkily named “Camerazzi” camera app that adds several new features. For instance, Cinemagraph allows users to animate still photographs. The 360 degree Panorama capture weaves together individual shots to create one panorama image. The rated battery life promises 105 hours of standby time and 7 hours of talk time. We'll wait for the full review where the Turbo will be put through the tech2 Loop tests to figure out its 'real' battery life.<br /><br /><u><b>The bottom line</b></u><br />On paper, the Turbo A250 easily comes across as one of the best value-for-money Androidsmartphones under Rs 20,000. While everything looks good on paper, it will now depend on how efficiently the Canvas Turbo delivers. If it hits the right chords with performance, then Micromax could very well have yet another winner.</span><br />

Over the course of a week of testing, the battery of the Note III demonstrated impressive longevity. On average, it lasted a solid day with heavy use, and could go to two days with light to moderate usage. Despite having similar materials as the Galaxy S 4 on the side, the back brings a premium look of leather to the device—well, plastic made to look like leather. The weight of the Note 3 makes it feel like a premium device in hand. The processor is very fast, especially for those coming from the US variants of the Galaxy S 4, which features the Snapdragon 600 processor. The S-Pen is even better than the original, with more sensitivity and streamlined size, combined with a new non-intrusive S-pen menu.</div>

The phone runs Android 4.3 skinned with TouchWiz UI. The implementation is visible in every aspect of the phone’s interface. Because of this, if you are looking for a phone that provides the pure Google experience, the Note 3 is not for you. However, the options that are added are intended to help the user be more productive.</div>

Multitasking is accessed with a long press of the home button rather than its own dedicated key. The apps and widgets are in the same position and work the same way as in stock Android. Folder creation is not the same as stock Android. You need to use the menu key to add a folder to the home screen, rather than hold two app icons on top of each other.</div>

The camera was modified as well, adding surround shot, panorama, golf, and burst shot modes. Sadly, there’s no dedicated night mode. The Messaging app was made to work with the extra space on the phone when in landscape mode.</div>

It’s likely that those who use the device for a few days will grow to enjoy the little changes, and added screen real estate. However, if you want a pure Google experience, get a Nexus 4, or wait a little and get the Nexus 5.</div>

The Note 3 shows its Samsung lineage, with many design traits similar to those seen on the Galaxy S IV and the original Note. The one main change is the speaker is at the lower face rather than near the back, like on the GS4. NFC is built into the back battery like on the GS4.</div>

The Phone’s dimensions are 5.95 x 3.12 x 0.32 inches, and it weighs in at 5.93 ounces (Note II was 6.46 oz). The S-pen fits inside the phone, and can be stored in the lower right side of the phone.</div>

The Note III is a big phone in a line of Phablets. I came to this device from a Galaxy S 4/Xperia Z/Note2. I now see the Galaxy S 4 as a small phone next to the Note 3. I love the power under the hood of the Note 3, and wish Samsung would flow down some of the new features of the Note 3 to the S 4/S III/Note II when they get the 4.3 update later this year.</div>

Make no mistake: The Note III is not made to be a one-handed phone, although Samsung includes quite a few one-handed use options under dialer and the calculator settings, and an all new one handed mode for easy access. Regardless, you will use both hands for the S-pen.</div>

The Note 3 will be available from all major US carriers soon. I could not pass the opportunity to get one on launch day, and have not put the phone down since.</div>
